Raub’s wealth was built on gold, while tin initially put the tranquil Fraser’s Hill highland retreat on the map. Raub is a service town below Fraser’s Hill, while many remote parts of the district are home to thrilling and adventurous activities in nature. Raub is centred on the grassy expanse of Dataran Raub with several heritage buildings along its perimeter. Raub’s majestic buildings reflect that it is one of the Pahang’s oldest towns. The Government Rest House overlooks Dataran Raub, while the former residences of government officials overlook the town. Some of Malaysia’s finest durians are grown on surrounding farms, while favourite foods in Raub include Malay cakes, Hainanese coffee and kaya toast, the famous ikan kelapa (fish head curry) served at Ratha Raub Restaurant, Chinese pastries at Kim Fah Tea House and Sempalit peanuts.
While international brands have yet to discover Raub, there are several small local hotels. Alternatively, adventurous travellers can enjoy a glamping experience at Tanah Aina Fahad Resort in Ulu Dong that is specifically located beside a wild river, or get to enjoy village life at homestays like Kampung Sungai Pasu. Several locations around Raub are ideal for bathing in the cool water of forest-lined streams, waterfalls and rapids. Bear in mind that sites like Berembun Waterfall are only accessible by 4 x 4 vehicles. Recreational activities around Ulu Dong attract those who enjoy camping and nature. There are waterfalls at Hutan Lipur Lata Jeram plus the opportunity to see Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower that only blooms on rare occasions. Recreational river activities at Pulau Chekas appeal to thrill seekers while Jeram Besu rapids near Benta offer grade two to four whitewater rafting.
